Gallivanters Hostel

Live and Work in Dar es Salaam

Start here if you are considering a longer stay in Dar es Salaam. Before committing to an apartment, test the internet where you will actually work, check the power arrangements, visit the street at different times and work out what your daily journeys will involve. A beautiful balcony is a bonus. Being able to hear your client on a call is rather more essential.

I came to Tanzania as a Jamaican-American and built a life that included remote VA work, family, two apartments and eventually Gallivanters Hostel with my husband, Kibwana. This guide connects the practical questions with the stories behind them.

Choose the question you need answered first

Before paying for a longer stay

CheckWhat to ask or test
InternetMake a video call from the room and desk you plan to use. Ask who manages the connection and how you can arrange a separate backup.
PowerAsk what works during an outage: the router, lights, sockets, air conditioning or only selected appliances. A generator on the property does not answer all those questions.
NoiseVisit during the hours you expect to work and sleep. Ask about nearby worship services, music and regular events.
Water and upkeepCheck taps, storage, drainage and who handles maintenance. Ask how problems are reported and how payments are recorded.
LocationTest the journeys you will repeat: groceries, meetings, family visits and your preferred places to work.
Payment termsGet the rent period, deposit, included bills, repair responsibilities and exit conditions in writing before paying.

Build your budget around your actual week

Separate your one-time arrival costs from your regular monthly spending. List accommodation, utilities, connectivity, groceries, eating out, transport and a reserve for unexpected costs. Then add your work expenses and any commitments you still pay back home. A holiday spending budget and a sustainable working budget are two different calculations.

I am not giving you a current monthly total here: rent, exchange rates and individual routines vary. Date each quote, record its currency and note exactly what is included. Our detailed neighborhood and budget articles will grow from real examples rather than a single number presented as everybody’s Dar experience.

Finding your footing beyond the practical checklist

Being Jamaican-American shaped how I arrived in Tanzania, but I do not assume every diaspora traveler will experience the same connection or adjustment. You can feel drawn to a place and still need time to understand its daily rhythms. Start with my own arrival story, then leave room for your experience to be yours.

For your time away from the laptop, browse our Dar food guide, transport options and the slower coastal route through Bagamoyo and Tanga.

Check the official requirements for your plans

For entry and residence questions, use Tanzania Immigration and its residence-permit guidance. Explain your intended activities and nationality when seeking advice; a travel story cannot determine which permission applies to your work or stay.
